Welcome to Illumination Writes! My name is Illumination Spencer, and before you ask, yes that is my legal name. Typically that is the first question people ask upon meeting me.
As this is my introduction to all you readers, what you should know about me is that I LOVE a good story. I have always been a reader for as long as I can remember, pulling out every board book for my grandma to read me when I was little. My love for reading eventually grew into the desire to create my own stories.
In 2016, I was inspired by one of my professors to pursue writing at a greater level, and I have not stopped since. I graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree in English/Writing in the spring of 2022 and started this blog as a way to keep writing a constant practice in my life.
My greatest life goal is to write short stories, poems, and novels that impact people in such a way that it inspires them to become the best version of themselves. I’m a firm believer that words can build worlds, stories shape society, and art can be a conduit for transformation.
Illumination Writes is my platform to pursue that goal and to write stories on my own terms. You can expect to see a little of everything on this blog—since I can’t seem to be pinned down to a single genre. I’ll be posting a variety of journal-esc articles, short stories, and poems. I am also working on a novel outside of the blog that I hope to share more about in the future.
Outside of my creative endeavors, I enjoy playing video games, watching movies, and spending time with my friends and family. I’m originally from Eastern Oregon, but I relocated to the Willamette Valley in 2022. Oddly, I love the rainy weather that Salem brings. It creates the perfect backdrop as I’m writing, surrounded by the ambiance of movie and game scores, lo-fi and synth-wave beats.
